While the North Island, also called Te Ika-a-Māui, is more built up and populous than the south, it's just as spectacular. With so much to see and do in the region, a campervan hire is a great way to get around.
Auckland has great national parks that are a short motorhome or campervan ride away. The Waitakere range park is close to the city, but it embodies natural beauty. Black beaches, a rainforest, and a chance to see ancient Maori carvings mean you won't want to miss out on this park.
If you want to drive your campervan hire north toward the tip of the isle, you can find Waipoua Forest. The park is incredible for hikes, walks, and wildlife tours.
To the south, you can drive to Whanganui National Park. Home to many of the island's iconic Kiwi population, the park is huge. It offers a range of activities, like hiking, canoeing, boat tours, and a chance to see the breathtaking Kaiwhakauka Waterfall.
Auckland has fantastic coastlines you can access with a campervan or motorhome hire. The region's west coast is renowned for its rugged, unspoiled beauty and incredible black beaches.
Karekare beach is remote and beautiful, Muriwai beach has incredible views, and Piha beach is a surfing hotspot.
The Rodney region's Lake Ototoa is an incredible freshwater lake. You can explore its unmatched beauty by row boat. For something smaller, you can try Lake Kawaupaka in Te Henga. It's a tourist hot spot for a reason.
Finally, Auckland has some great rivers too. The Hoteo river is excellent for kayaking and rafting, while the Puhoi river has paddle boats, kayaking, cruises, and unmissable scenery.

The Avondale Motorhome is close to the city. It has many motorhome or campervan pitches, all the necessary facilities, and a kid's playground.

Near the Whanganui National Park, you can find the Whanganui Seaside Holiday Park. With three acres of landscaped grounds, a swimming pool, saunas, and a B.B.Q. area, it's a great facility. With Castlecliff beach and Kowhai Park just a walk away, there is plenty for the family to see and do.
Wonderful experience with Indiecamper and the Quest Auto model for a family of 4 with young children. Highly recommend them and would rent again.
It was so so good! I was nervous the trekker would be too small, or exposed, or insufficient. But it was PERFECT for a solo traveller; small enough to navigate in cities, quick enough to handle hills, 4x4 function was great for tracks, and I could camp out wherever I felt like! So good. The whole thing feels like it’s designed by someone who actually camps, big compliment. Darren was so helpful and patient with my nerves on check in too. I loved it so much I’ve booked another trip already! Would definitely recommend.
Philip was excellent and super helpful at the pick up point in Auckland, as were Kate and Andrew at the drop off in Christchurch. I had the most amazing experience driving through New Zealand, and made memories I will treasure for the rest of my life.
