Motorhome Hire Bilbao

Bilbao was for many years a focal point for the Spanish industry, making it an underwhelming city for tourists. But all this changed, and the urban redevelopment that took place breathed new life into this Basque city, with great attractions for tourists such as the Guggenheim or the Muelle de Marzana, known as the coolest neighbourhood in Bilbao. The estuaries that cross Bilbao are also a very important part of its history and on its banks is where today you can find shopping districts as important as El Arenal, which are a reflection of the paradigm shift of the city.

On the outskirts of Bilbao, you will find special places such as San Juan de Gaztelugatxe, where Game of Thrones was filmed.

Getting to Bilbao

Bilbao is located in the north of Spain, a few kilometres from the Cantabrian Sea, and only 123 kilometres from the French border. To get to Bilbao by road, there are 3 different routes. From Cantabria on the A-8 freeway, from San Sebastian on the AP-8 and the AP-68 if you are coming from the south, around Madrid. Bilbao airport is only 15 minutes away from the city centre, with Vueling and Iberia being the main companies operating from all over Spain, although you can also find international flights.

The Bilbao-Abando Indalecio Prieto train station is the main one, where trains arrive from France and from all over Spain. The Renfe Aldiriak Bilbao line, the Bilbao commuter train, also has this station as its hub.

As you can see, motorhome hire in Bilbao can be exciting, and you have the opportunity to visit more than just this city.

Parking in Bilbao

The centre of Bilbao is famous for its narrow streets, so finding a parking space is very difficult. The most popular option for people who want to park near the centre is usually the parking lots, such as the Guggenheim or El Arenal, which cost around €1.50 per hour. If you want to rent a motorhome in Bilbao and park for free, it is best to do it in nearby towns such as Getxo, Portugalete, or Baracaldo.

Annual Events in Bilbao

  • Semana Grande de Bilbao: These festivities are celebrated in Bilbao from the second week of August, and are one of the most important events in Bilbao. It lasts 9 days, during which you can find all kinds of cultural activities around the city.
  • BBK Live: Held during the first week of July, it brings together national and international pop-rock stars.
  • Santo Tomás Market: This event is one of the most important gastronomic fairs in Spain since Bilbao is known for its pintxos. It is held on February 21.
  • Holy Week: Another of the religious festivities that take place in Bilbao. Every year it varies between the months of March and April, and it is a great opportunity to learn about the traditions of Bilbao.

Camping in Bilbao

  • Camping Sopelana: About 18 minutes from the centre of Bilbao, this campsite is by the sea. Prices vary between €30.00 and €39.00.
  • Camping Arrien Gorliz: Located 25 minutes from Bilbao, this is another campsite on the shores of the Bay of Biscay. Prices vary between €15.00 and €25.00.
  • Bilbao campervan site: 10 minutes from the centre of Bilbao, almost in the middle of the city, it costs €15.00 per night.

The best time to hire a campervan in Bilbao

Weather graph for average temperatures in Bilbao
Average temperatures in Bilbao per month

Located very close to the Cantabrian coast, this is a place where you must always be wary of the weather conditions. With clouds almost all year round, Bilbao has a high average annual rainfall, so campervan hire in Bilbao is always a very good option as you will always want to have a roof over your head. In addition, you must not forget your raincoat and umbrella for excursions.

The temperature varies depending on the time of the year you visit Bilbao. The cold season starts in November and lasts until March when the temperature drops to 5°C (41°F) on average. The period from June to September is considered the warm season, with an average temperature of 22°C (72°F), making this the perfect time to visit Bilbao and practice some water sports such as surfing and bodyboarding. In addition, the summer months like July and August are when you find warmer water, as the temperature of the Cantabrian Sea reaches up to 22°C (72°F).

The best time to rent a campervan in Bilbao is in the summer. This is when the weather is at its best and the city is full of life. But you should keep in mind that from the second week of August onwards, the Semana Grande takes place, which is a very busy holiday in Bilbao, so prices will be higher, and the streets will be crowded. Another very good time to visit Bilbao are the months of September and October, when temperatures have not fallen so much, the density of tourists is lower and prices are lower.
