When people think of Frankfurt, the first thing that comes to mind is the city's banking district and its huge skyscrapers. In contrast to this is the old town, just a stone's throw away, which combines tradition with modernity. But there are many other things that are typical of the big Hessian city: the typical Frankfurt dialect, the apple wine or a special kind of green sauce called "Grie Soß". You can find these delicacies in the "Freßgass", the pedestrian zone. You can also really enjoy yourself with a campervan hire in Frankfurt and escape the noise of the city centre on the banks of the Main and or in the Palmengarten.
Away from the city walls, the Schwanheim Dunes are a real insider tip. They are a type of inland dunes; they are very rare and only a few of them exist in Europe. The boardwalk is ideal for hikers.
Frankfurt is very conveniently located. The Frankfurter Kreuz intersection is one of the busiest road junctions, not only in Germany but throughout Europe. By car, you can reach Frankfurt from all directions via the A3 and A5 motorways and the B53. By train, you can travel to Frankfurt's main railway station. More than 1,100 trains arrive and depart here every day, connecting the city with international and national destinations. Frankfurt Airport is also one of the most important airports in Germany. More than 1,300 flights are handled here every day, and all the well-known airlines such as Lufthansa, Eurowings, TUIfly, Ryanair or Condor are represented. A somewhat smaller commercial airport is located in Frankfurt-Hahn.
Central parking with a motorhome hire in Frankfurt is difficult, but there are a few possibilities on the outskirts of the city. At City Camp Frankfurt, look for the street name "An der Sandelmühle", you can park for €8.50 per day. Alternatively, to the west, there is the Camp-Phönix Park in Eschborn, directly adjacent to Frankfurt. Here you can even park for free. Just a few kilometres outside the city limits, you can park your campervan free of charge in Bad Vilbel, either at the open-air swimming pool or at the fairground ("Festplatz“).
The climate in Frankfurt is considered moderate, with changeable weather and a high amount of rainfall. May to August are particularly rainy months, with an average precipitation of over 60 mm. At the same time, however, the sunshine hours in these months are higher than in any other month of the year. The warmest months are July and August, with average temperatures of around 19°C, and the coldest months are December to February, with average temperatures of 1 to 3°C.
Despite the high rainfall, campervan hire still is most enjoyable in the summer months: Not only is it warmer and sunnier, but it is also less crowded by tourists and tends to be cheaper. Tourism in Frankfurt is particularly booming in January and February, while April and May are the least busy months for tourism. There is also a bit more going on in July and August, when the (River) Main Festival takes place, for example. The city is particularly crowded there. Hence, it is recommended to park a little outside, especially with a campervan rental in Frankfurt.
Winter in Frankfurt is still a good time to visit as most campsites are open all year round and the waffles at the trendy "Waffel House" in Berger Straße taste even better when it’s cold out. In addition, Frankfurt's ice rink is open for the season, with its highlight being the large outdoor ring under the open sky and the 35-metre-high ice rink with a panoramic view of the Frankfurt skyline.
