Motorhome Hire Northern Ireland

Northern Ireland is formed from the six north-east counties of the island of Ireland, and unlike the Republic to the south and west, it is one of four constituent nations of the United Kingdom. The capital is Belfast, which includes the Titanic Quarter and the region’s best shopping. Just a short drive away are areas of stunning natural beauty, including The Dark Hedges (from Game of Thrones), coastline including County Antrim’s Giant’s Causeway UNESCO World Heritage Site, and Lough Neagh. The largest freshwater lake in the UK, it provides almost boundless waterborne activities, from fishing to birdwatching.

Survival Guide

  • English is the primary language of business and the first tongue of most of the population.
  • The currency of Northern Ireland is the British Pound (GBP). In addition to UK banknotes, four regional banks print their own notes. Coins are the same as the rest of the UK.
  • The cost of a main meal for two at a mid-range restaurant in Belfast will cost around €38. Smaller towns and cities will have slightly reduced prices by comparison.
  • A premium beer will cost as much as €8 per

No less than eight restaurants in Northern Ireland have at least one Michelin star. However, you don’t have to spend big to sample the region’s traditional cuisine. Start the day with an Ulster Fry, which comes with soda bread, eggs, sausage and potato cakes. At other times of day, look out for Irish stew, a slow cooked blend of lamb and vegetables, sometimes served with a side of champ (mash potato with spring onion).

Annual Events in Northern Ireland

  • Ballyclare May Fair, County Antrim, May. This event started out more than 260 years ago as a horse fair, but today also includes funfair rides, film screenings and a fireworks display. Free.
  • North West 200, Portstewart to Portrush, May. Motor fans won’t want to miss the North West 200, which sees motorcycle racers from around the world tackle the famous ‘triangle’ track. Spectators from €35.
  • The Twelfth, countrywide, July. Perhaps the biggest day in the calendar, The Twelfth commemorates the victory of King William III at the Battle of the Boyne in 1690 and is marked by multistorey bonfires and street parades. Free.

 Camping in Northern Ireland

  • Causeway Coast Holiday Park. In addition to incredible coastal views, this 28-acre site also includes a heated pool, children’s play area and games room. From €27 per night.
  • Glenmore Caravan and Camping Park. Views from the grass and hardstand pitches stretch across Rathlin island to Scotland, while facilities include a bar, restaurant and fly-fishing. From €34 per night.
  • Burt’s One Night Stands. A basic site with prices to match and a wild camping feel within ten minutes of the Garvagh Forest. From €14 per night.
