Motorhome Hire Palermo

Palermo is one of the most visited cities in southern Italy. Its historic centre boasts an enormous artistic and cultural baggage and has even been recognized in the world heritage by UNESCO. The first thing you absolutely must see in Palermo is its cathedral, a mixture of over a thousand years of the city's history. After wandering among churches and fountains scattered around the centre, pop into the city market, a place to feel the true southern spirit and buy some of the best local produce. If you are a lover of history and art, do not miss a visit to the archaeological site of Segesta, located in a splendid natural gorge 90 km from Palermo. Not everyone knows that this ancient city has been named the European Capital of Street Food; among the most famous specialities are the fried arancine and the legendary Sicilian cannoli. If you want to taste traditional Palermo dishes, we recommend the Trattoria da Totò and the Pasticceria Costa in the city centre.

Getting to Palermo

Palermo is located on the northwest coast of Sicily and is well connected to mainland Italy by various means of transport. The fastest is definitely flying; Falcone Borsellino Airport is well served by low-cost flights with the main airlines: Ryanair and EasyJet (flight times from London: 2.50 hours). If you prefer to take your motorhome rental in Palermo with you, the best solution is the ferry to Naples, Salerno or Genoa. The journey by car is long but well connected by the Salerno-Reggio Calabria motorway; once arrived in Messina, continue on the A20 to Palermo (2.30 hours). Alternatively, you can take a train from Reggio Calabria (5.30 hours), Naples (9.30 hours), Rome (11.20 hours) or Milan (15 hours) and arrive at Palermo Station.

Parking in Palermo

The historic centre of Palermo is a limited traffic area, so there is no access for non-residents. However, there are several blue-striped parking lots along the streets just outside the centre (€1/hour). If you prefer to leave your car in guarded parking lots, we recommend the Palermo Centrale Parking (€1/hour - €10/day) and the Palermo Garage Welcome Parking (€2/hour), both close to the historic centre. Not far from the centre there is the Via Ernesto Basile car park (€2/day), near the university. Alternatively, there is a campervan park near the Royal Palace (€25/day).
