small town scenery in the UK

Motorhome Hire UK

Sharing a complicated history, and no less than 32 UNESCO World Heritage Sites, the UK nations have a diverse landscape. Neat parcels of farmland in the southeast drift into rolling hills to the north, snowy mountains in Wales, epic lochs (lakes) in Scotland and a whole symphony of Game of Thrones vistas in Northern Ireland are waiting for you to explore them in your motorhome rental in the UK. The Jurassic Coast of the southwest contributes to one of the longest national coastlines on the planet, while the likes of Stonehenge, the Lake District, and North York Moors have been wowing visitors for literally hundreds of years.

Fun Facts

  • Although it is one of the most recognizable images in the world, the Union Jack has no legal standing as the national flag and has been used for more than 300 years by tradition alone.
  • The cathedral town of Lichfield in Staffordshire is the furthest you can get from the sea, which is still just 135 kilometres away.
  • The UK has had 61 different kings and queens. Queen Elizabeth II holds the record for the longest reign after her coronation in 1952. The shortest reign was that of Lady Jane Grey, queen for just 9 days in 1553.

Camping in the UK

The only part of the UK where it’s permitted to wild camp is in Scotland, where it is allowed on any public land, including within the Cairngorms National Park. However, permits are required for campervan rental in the UK to stay at the national parks, Loch Lomond and the Trossachs, between March and September because of its popularity. At the opposite end of the UK, Dartmoor has dedicated spots for backpack (i.e., wild) camping too. Likewise, it is generally tolerated away from settlements in the Lake District. It’s normally fine to camp on private land – so long as you ask permission from the landowner first.

Driving in the UK

The UK drives on the left-hand side of the road. There are no border formalities between the four nations. A good motorway network connects most major towns and cities. The speed limit is 70 mph (112 kph). In rural areas of Scotland and Northern Ireland, single track roads are common. Passing places exist every few hundred meters.

There are very few toll roads in the UK, the main one being the M6 Toll around Birmingham in the Midlands. Prices for campervans range from £8-12. Some bridges also charge a toll, most notably the Humber Bridge in northern England. Campervan charges start at £1.35. With careful planning, alternative free routes can be used.

Annual Events in the UK

  • Queen’s Official Birthday, June: See the UK capital in all its pomp and tradition with the Trooping the Colour ceremony, involving hundreds of scarlet-coated soldiers. Street-side observance is free.
  • Wimbledon Fortnight, June-July: The UK goes tennis crazy as the Wimbledon Championships take place. Ground passes cost around £20, a seat for the men’s final will set you back £225.
  • Guy Fawkes Night, November: Commemorating a plot to blow up parliament in 1605, towns large and small construct bonfires and put on impressive fireworks displays. Often free, the biggest have small entrance fees of around £8.
